A Living Archive of Gold Country Memory
APRIL 2026
A Rich Vein of Local History
Nestled in the heart of California Gold Country, the Calaveras County Historical Society holds decades of accumulated family records, county documents, and cultural artifacts — a continuously growing archive that tells the story of a remarkable place and its people.
Preserving What Others Forget
From scrapbooks and diaries to photo albums and newspapers, the Society’s collections document ordinary and extraordinary lives alike. Las Calaveras, their quarterly bulletin, has chronicled the region since 1952 — a continuous thread through more than seven decades.

Open to Researchers, Guided by Expertise
The Historical Society’s office holds large file cabinets organized by family name and topic — Buildings & Stores, General History A–Z, Gold Mines, and more — continuously updated with each new research request. While original artifacts are handled only by staff, researchers receive scans and copies of anything they need.
The Willard Fuller Research Room, located upstairs in the museum, is available by in-person visit or scheduled email appointment. Manuscripts, magazines, and bound volumes fill its shelves — available for public research with staff coordination to pull the most relevant materials.
Research requests may be placed in person, by phone, or by email. The first thirty minutes are provided free of charge, with additional time billed at $20.00 per hour. Staff will provide scans, copies, and their own findings to each researcher.
The Society’s website at historicalcalaveras.com includes historic town photos and a complete archive of all prior issues of Las Calaveras — the quarterly bulletin published without interruption since 1952.
